What have we been doing since our last real blog????
Well, the answer is all kinds of stuff!! We’ve had a couple clutches hatch, (we are using tea-related names this year as our theme) received some new crew members, Sallymander cooled for 3 successful months, and then laid us another fertile clutch from Katoom. We finally got our website up, although the real domain is on hold at the moment. We have over 90 likes on our Facebook page, which for us is wonderful! I have met some pretty amazing people during this learning extravaganza I’ve done. Some of them I would consider friends and now connect with daily. What a great thing all this iHerping, Facebooking and general networking has done for my life! The last time we did a blog, we were expecting some Dubias. We got them from a good friend in Arizona, someone I met along the Herpetological shenanigans of the internet. She’s an amazing person, and really fun to have as a friend. Well! They did get shipped successfully! And they are growing like crazy! Our female dubias are nice and fat and happy. We also received a couple little cuuuute pictus geckos from Sarah Dickenson at Lunar Gecko. Those little guys are so adorable and so cute! We also have been keeping our eye on a lovely male pinner to pair with our yellow Brindie girl. For this year, the last gecko we plan on receiving is a red pinner to pair with Sallymander. I really love the pinners, and plan on having pinners as my focus for cresties. Also, in the future I plan on having a few cave geckos (2 or 3 or 100!!). I really love cave geckos. I plan to breed them once we get some good experience with the species, and focus less on cresties; at least until the market is less flooded. Eventually, in the future, I plan on having a pair of U. Henkeli or U. sikorae. I really love the uroplatus geckos, ALL of them. And I can see owning a pair or two easily, the only issue would be my experience in housing such fragile geckos. I really would love some, but I want to take it slow and build up to more and more challenging geckos before I reach the point of breeding uroplatus in the future. This month, we sold three cresties, which for us is GREAT! I’m happy with that, completely!! We also got some racks up. We are no longer buying any glass terrariums since we have enough of them. The two thirty gallon(ish) tanks are going to eventually be turned into naturalistic vivariums for our show animals, and the rest are going to be housed in twenty to thirty gallon tubs that our wooden racks are now holding. We have plenty of these tubs and several large kritter keepers for our hatchlings and young juveniles. I love the kritter keepers because they are just the right size, and are stackable. Plus, they all look the same (except for color) and are readily available for a relatively inexpensive price. We have started hot-gluing skewers horizontally and crookedly for the little baby cresties in their little kritter keepers. They work great, and give them lots of jumping space. We also started receiving toilet paper rolls from friends and family, because, I just can’t keep up with all the rolls we are changing out every week, and they make great hides. Makes things easier! With all the wonderful help I’ve been receiving, and loads of friends, new goals and having them in my line of sight, I’ve just been so giddy! I love my hobby so much, it’s the ultimate hobby for me—and the longest I’ve ever had a hobby—almost three years so far! Geckos really are the best. Regards. --Rachel
